Nick Warburton

Nick's acting debut with the company was as Sir Thomas More in A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS.  Other acting appearances include A CHRISTMAS CAROL (The Ghost of Christmas Present. Nick also played one of the Narrators and various other characters including a Baker and an Undertaker!), AN IDEAL HUSBAND (Sir Robert Chiltern), THE ELEPHANT MAN (which he directed and, due to the illness of the actor who was to have played Frederick Treves, took over the role at extremely short notice at the dress rehearsal), KATHERINE HOWARD (Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk), THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE (The Reverend Edward Peck) and THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (Aramis), DICK BARTON - SPECIAL AGENT (BBC Announcer), THREE MEN IN A BOAT (Sexton, Train Traveller and others) - Nick also adapted the novel for the stage. He also co-directed and adapted for the stage THE TINDERBOX & OTHER STORIES (The Princess and The Pea). Recent acting roles include TWELFTH NIGHT (Fabian), THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP (Grandfather) - Nick also adapted the novel for the stage, WHEN WE ARE MARRIED (pictured above as Herbert Soppitt), ONE NIGHT IN NOVEMBER (John Martin), THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (De Boville / Noirtier) - Nick also adapted the novel for the stage, COMIC POTENTIAL (Doctor/ Lester Trainsmith / Man in Shop / Man in Restaurant) and SEPARATE TABLES (Mr Fowler).

Nick also directed Alan Ayckbourn's TIME OF MY LIFE and JOKING APART for the company. Other acting appearances for the company include TREASURE ISLAND (Squire Trelawney). He followed this production by adapting Robert Frost's NORTH OF BOSTON, which he directed both in Cambridge and Edinburgh.  His adaptation of THE MOONSTONE was premiered by the company in December 2003; in it he played Begbie, Herncastle, Dr Candy, Old Ablewhite, Mrs Yolland and A Stationmaster. Nick also directed the 2004 Bawds Drama Festival production WHERE PEOPLE PERFORM and DICKENS' CHILDREN (which he also devised) for the Bawds Edinburgh Festival Fringe production the same year, and (in 2006) A LITTLE BRIEF AUTHORITY, which he adapted from MEASURE FOR MEASURE. In addition to this Nick adapted Christopher Marlowe's DOCTOR FAUSTUS which was presented under the Bawds banner at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Nick's latest stage adaptation for the company was Charles Dickens' NICHOLAS NICKLEBY. Other directing credit for Bawds include UNDER MILK WOOD, ABSENT FRIENDS, THE AUTHENTIC LIFE OF BILLY THE KID, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, WAITING FOR LEFTY and THE LAST BREAD PUDDING (2nd Place - Sawston Drama Festival 2018. 1st Place, Best Actor, Best Cameo Performance & Audience Award - Cambridge Drama Festival 2018)).

His directing credits for other companies include TWELFTH NIGHT, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, UNDER MILK WOOD and SAILOR, BEWARE!

Nick is a successful playwright and author. His published stage plays include SOUR GRAPES AND ASHES, DON'T BLAME IT ON THE BOOTS, ZARTAN, RECEIVE THIS LIGHT, THE LOOPHOLE, NOT BOBBY, EASY STAGES, DISTRACTED GLOBE, THE DROITWICH DISCOVERY,GHOST WRITER, ROUND THE WORLD WITH CLASS SIX, THE LAST BREAD PUDDING, OFFICE SONG, DOMBY DOM, SECRETS, THE NATIVITY LETTERS, WAITING FOR NESBIT, MUSIC LOVERS and THE FROZEN FIELDS. His full-length play TOUCH WOOD was was premiered at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.

A number of his plays have appeared at the Edinburgh Festival, including STRAIGHTENING PICTURES, OUT OF THE ROSE GARDEN, BRIGHT GLADE - TALES FROM TOLSTOY, ACKFORD'S MONSTER, SHY and CRITICAL CONDITION. Nick has also written over 20 plays for BBC Radio 3, 4 (the most recent being WITNESS) and 5 as well as a number of television scripts for DOCTORS,  HOLBY CITY BORN AND BRED and EASTENDERS. Nick was the winner of the BBC Peter Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Play of 2005. His many radio plays include WITNESS and the successful Radio 4 series ON MARDLE FEN and HOLDING BACK THE TIDE.

In 2008 Nick became a Patron of Bawds.
